The Sankoff Family: Maui Family Photography
It’s such a treat to be able to shoot big family groups. The Sankoff’s were visiting Maui from California and the whole gang was there for vacation (grandparents, parents, kids, and girlfriends)! It’s nice to see the multi-generational lines of my clients and the conversations are always fun. Everyone in this family was so sweet and I love how their photos came out (talk about a photogenic family!).
We met up at “Secret Beach” in Makena. Now, the south side of Maui is known for its epic sunsets, but the early mornings are just as beautiful. Before the wind picks up and the waves get stronger and bigger, there is a calm and tranquil time of day that is perfect for photo sessions. The West Maui mountains block the harsh rays of the rising sun, but there is just enough light to cast a gorgeous morning glow on the south shores of Maui.
Although “Secret Beach” isn’t much of a secret anymore, the mornings are a great time to go if you want to beat the crowd. The beach itself is crescent-shaped and the small bay looks out to the tiny island of Molokini (and Kaho’olawe behind it). However, what really catches the eye at this spot is the clear blue water and jagged lava rocks that are scattered along the shoreline. It really is a beautiful “hidden” gem.
The Sankoff’s showed up in color-coordinating outfits and they all looked so great! The blue and white combo is always a good choice for beach portraits. We started off at the far edge of the beach near the trees, and that green color really popped against the calm, bluish-gray sky. I also made sure to get some photos of the family on the lava rocks and near the water along the shoreline.
The mama (2nd generation) of the group was so happy to be with all her boys (she has 4!), and requested that they recreate an old photograph of them jumping in the air. I thought that was an excellent idea and, as you can see, that particular picture turned out awesome!
All in all, I had a great time with this family. Mahalo to the Sankoff’s for choosing me as their Maui family photographer!
